Local Charity
Most lodges make charitable donations to local good causes - often because of the particular interests and knowledge of their members. A Master may nominate a worthy cause for his term of office and all or part of the money raised by lodge collections and special fund raising events will then be donated to the cause. Many thousands of pounds have been donated through such informal arrangements. In addition, Berkshire Freemasonry has its own charity established to channel the charitable efforts of the whole county.
The Berkshire Masonic Charity
The Berkshire Masonic Charity exists to provide grants to worthy causes in and around Berkshire. Since its inception, grants totalling about £800,000 have been made to nearly 1000 recipients in and around Berkshire. Applications for support grants for individuals or local good causes must be made through a lodge in the county and are considered quarterly.
The objectives of the Charity are to:
-
Relieve poverty and distress among inhabitants of, and visitors to, Berkshire
-
Support and provide funds for any other wholly charitable organisation which operates to relieve poverty and distress
-
Advance religion and education
-
Support any charitable trusts or organisations that may benefit all or some of the inhabitants of or visitors to the Province and
-
Carry out such other legally charitable purposes as the Trustees shall from time to time declare.
In addition to this work locally, masons from Berkshire contribute to our main charity which operates at national and international levels.
