The Fair Close Centre is a friendly place for senior citizens to meet, eat and relax in Newbury and 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening. The Trustees were looking for a number of ways of renovating and modernising the Centre which has changed very little since it was built in the mid 1960s.
Newbury Freemasons offered their assistance, and proceeded to complete some of the outstanding work including
- Renovating the 120 sq mtr main hall wooden floor
- Cladding, and painting a number of soffits and fascias
- Repairing garden benches
- Large areas of internal and external paintwork
- And even renovating and decorating a large room used as a hair salon.
The Berkshire Masonic Charity released £1,000 to cover the cost of all the materials and over 4 weekends in July a group of 21 Newbury Freemasons completed all the tasks taken on. It is estimated that the work done by Newbury Freemasons has saved the Centre somewhere between £12,000 and £15,000.
