Organised Freemasonry dates from June 1717 and initially Lodges met in Taverns and Ale Houses, but over the years they have become isolated from their local communities by gathering together in regional Masonic Centres.
A group of Brethren living in the vicinity of Swallowfield decided that they would like to take Masonry back to its roots by meeting and dining in a local hostelry. By so doing they aimed to re-integrate themselves into the neighbourhood from which they aimed to recruit, raise the local population’s awareness of the Order and hopefully gain new members.
Their efforts came to fruition on 4th February 2019 when Swallowfield Pitt Bridge Lodge No. 9970 was consecrated by the Provincial Grand Master for Berkshire. It will meet four times a year on the 1st Mondays in February (Installation), September & November and the 2nd Monday in May at the Mill House Hotel, Basingstoke Road, Swallowfield.
